There are four resources that are essential to any prospective technical writer:

These two books:

And these two websites:

The society for technical communication

Tech Whirl - In particular, their mailing list.

The two books give you all the basic knowledge you need. "How To Get Started As A Technical Writer" is a very quick, easy read with a great glossary at the end. It's a strong start. Where that one lacks, "The Insider's Guide to Technical Writing" fills the void.

The two websites are communities that are essential for the modern technical writer. The society has paid dues; Tech Whirl has an open mailing list.

If you want to transition into technical writing, start with the books, then dig deeper with the websites. You will be on much better ground.
